I don't see the official issue topic up yet and thought I'd comment now anyway; you watch out or I'll be a topic-master on the issue at hand.

Though hopefully you'll transfer my comments to the official topic when it does go up.

Not that I have so many comments as yet, but I did want to say how bowled over I was by the cover print--Five Thrillers! I looked and saw only four. That's still more of that kind of fiction than F&SF usually has. Then I go to the contents page and see that that's the title of Robert Reed's story. The joke on me is worth the use of the smiley that I have clicked onto my title. That's how much I laughed...but then I felt like a hobgoblin too, that taken in, that clumsy in my perception. Never mind, the joke is a good one.

Well, more reading to do, and perhaps an F&SF contest to enter.

RINGWORLD by Larry Niven

When the space ship came to the unearthly planet they saw it had rings worse than Saturn's. Putting on helmets to have air, they got out on the rings and began to dance around the planet. They had pockets full of posey. It was a small planet and they got around it in a day in their joy.
I've got biff and zow

Unlike true science fiction fans, I read the classifieds first. I was fooled by the Squid once, but, this time I believe there are TWO joke ads. Sometimes I can't figure out which one is the joke the first time.

Can contest entries be entered by posting here?

The staff of F&SF adds only one joke ad to each issue. The squid ad is a paid ad. You can see here what they're advertising: http://www.poormojo.org/cgi-bin/gennie.pl?Squid

The latest competition (here: http://www.sfsite.com/fsf/2008/competition0804.htm) includes info on how to enter.

Or did you mean our little contest for the giveaway copy of THE MARTIAN CHILD? If so, go here: http://www.sfsite.com/fsf/blog/2008/03/03/win-a-copy-of-the-martian-child-on-dvd /#comments

Reed again! :0)

The Haw story was pretty amusing, again, too.

Utley's and Stoddard's stories are my favorite. Wilhem's not bad too. "Five Thrillers" let me utterly cold. It's an iceberg of a story. Interesting but globally disappointing (for me).
There's something wrong with me this year: on the whole, my favorite F&SF stories are the fantasy ones...
