Dear Night Shade Friends,
Well, after twenty-three years here, the time has finally arrived that I'm pulling up stakes and leaving New Orleans. My family and I will be relocating in August to Manassas, Virginia. My temporary project management office is being disbanded in the Louisiana Transitional Recovery Office, so my coworkers and I are being laid off as of the middle of next month. I'm hoping to be starting a new job in Washington, DC by that time (depending on when my security clearance is completed).
Dara and the boys and I will be moving into a smaller house, so I'm having to unload a whole bunch of stuff. I mean a whole BUNCH. I'm liquidating most of my collection of vintage laptop and portable computers, mainly because I won't have room to store them up in Manassas (plus, shipping them up there would cost a quarter of what they're worth). I had made plans with a local consignment seller for him to handle the collection, but he backed out at the last minute, leaving me high and dry. So I placed the following ad in Craig's List today. If any of you know anyone who is interested in either collecting or reselling vintage computers, this could be an incredible buy for them, as the machines are going for only $30 apiece, and many of them are in immaculate condition and include numerous original accessories. The only caviat: I am unable to ship the stuff. I simply don't have time. So whoever buys the collection must pick them up at my home in Algiers, on the West Bank of New Orleans (or at my mother-in-law's house around the block from the house I'm selling, if I don't sell the laptops prior to needing to empty the house). Here's the ad from Craig's List:

If all else fails, maybe you could donate them to the Computer History Museum and they could somehow arrange for transport:
Good luck with the move!

Jeff - even though Andy isn't on Facebook yet, I did start a group there devoted to him. It's called the Andrew Fox Appreciation Team (AFAT). Please look for it and join us. :-)

Some good news. . . at the last minute (the day the movers came to pick up all of our stuff), I linked up with an electronics consignment seller in Slidell, who stuffed all the computers into his pickup truck. They're all listed on eBay now. If they don't sell as a collection, he'll relist them individually or in smaller groupings.
I'm back in New Orleans for the next ten days or so, until Saturday, August 15, when I fly back to Virginia and rejoin my family. Dara and I are sweating out a race between the completion of my security clearance process at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (required for me to be assigned an official start date and, by extension, for the approval of our home loan) and the house closing deadline of August 31. The actual background investigation has been completed, but no one can tell me for certain how long ICE Security's internal bureaucratic procedures will take from this point on; the worst case scenario is another 45 days, which would likely result in our losing the house we want to buy in Manassas, plus our deposit. So please send good wishes our way that my paperwork doesn't end up buried under somebody's copy of Sports Illustrated. . .

Andy, Dara, et. al.
Hi. Are you relocated yet in VA? What is the news? We are fine here and Mike is doing great in San Diego. He and Sabina were in France for a vacation just a few weeks ago with Sabina's two nieces accompaning them. They drove from the Riviera to Provence and to Paris.
We were in DC for the weddding of Nancy's cousin David Alpert on June 5 and 6. He has a blog in DC and is interested in public transportation. You might like to meet him sometime. He worked for Googhle until last year.

Hi, Mem! I'm glad we hooked up off-line. For those of you who aren't familiar with him, Mem Shannon is one of New Orleans' top blues musicians. One of his earlier albums, A Cab Driver's Blues, played a part in my first book, Fat White Vampire Blues. He's a hell of a musician. Check him out!
