Please help me with recalling the author and/or title of a story I read some time ago. I read it in Polish translation, so not all the names may be right.
Anyway, the story is roughly that in a distant future on Earth our population is very sparse and heavily relies on technology for basic living and for all the fancies they can think of, including extreme body shaping. Some people even changed themselves so much that you have like other races (e.g. elfs). The whole technology is controlled by a central sort of computed called Mother (not entirely sure of that name, though), which is strong enough to control Earth's resources and elements. People are generally pretty hedonistic and lost all the skills that could help them survive without the hi-tech, except for smallish groups that cherish the past, recreate past skills/things, meet to practice old ways of life, etc. (just like today). The Earth is ruled by a sort of committee or board. One day, as a result of a quarrel on that board with some board members having evil intentions, the Mother is switched off and all that life-supporting technology vanishes. Now people have to rely on themselves to survive. The story is about a mother with a teenage son who set out on a quest from their defunct house to find other people and find some help and comfort. They reach a village created by those past-loving freaks, who suddenly are the only ones knowing how to survive and organise things without the hi-tech support.

I remember that one of the past-loving guys who was an expert in military things and combat was called Sarge (or Serge). There was another one who was elected mayor of the village. Some of the book is about how they organised their village (crops, crafts, animal keeping, etc.) and how they set about putting up small troops to defend it.

Here are some more flash memories from that book: Sarge training young men in infantry practice (torturing them with marching practice), bow practice exercises, the hero (the teenage son) becoming a good infantryman, a battle with some bad guys led by main villain by the name McCoy (or MacSomethingelse), some experiments done by the archevil member of the board (a woman), some scenes when the mutiny on the board occurred and the bad guys took control of the board but somehow couldn't get control of Mother (which was switched off), one of the final scenes where McCoy (or MacSomethingelse) calls the awaken Mother to help him but issues a stupid instruction and is accidentally killed by Mother's exercise of huge force.

Uff, I wrote a lot but I hope somebody will be able to help me. Thanks for your patience. And anyway, it was really a great story to read!
