I like Howie Long as a commentator. He's always been a steady, thoughtful presence to Terry's bombasticism.

LSU is clearly the superior team -- but what's with the antagonism?

It's weird. As studio analysts, Howie kicks TB all over the place. He's much better. And I don't have much good to say about Bradshaw, other than that he seems like a nice guy personally (met him when SMP did his book). But Bradshaw has been really pretty good calling this game. Spot on analysis. Actually looking hard at what's happening on the field and calling them like he sees 'em (which just doesn't happen nearly often enough for what should be a basic job function). TB has done pretty well today. Actually, for what I expected, he's been terrific. (And Howie's been playin' catchup, though in the second half, Howie's hit his stride.)

I REFUSE to share my title with the likes of Ford. I know, I know, Lucius was probably saying either Ford or I could still win, but I stand by my interpretation of the text, and denunciation of Ford.

And Jeff, how the heck did you know that I have a thing for Millard Fillmore? You know, other than the whole Fugitive Slave Act he was forced to sign as part of the Compromise of 1850. Oh, and his admitting California into the US. And giving money to TX for New Mexico. Other than that, he was great. Well, he did oppose Lincoln throughout the Civil War. And while he called slavery evil, he believed the Constitution protected it. But he was a snazzy dresser. I think we're going to have to start calling our dba BS sessions the "Official Gathering of the Millard Fillmore Irregulars."

The sweetest part about taking the Editor's Cup is that if Chris wouldn't be such an inveterate slacker, he could've taken it--that TCU win was pretty much a gimme.

But hey, there's those who prioritize properly, and then there's the slackers who watch the winners sip deep from the Cup o' Victory. Right, Chris?

Message from Jeff Ford:

Minz: Depending on how many points you have left, you could pass me for
3rd place. As a matter of fact, Chris probably could too. I don't have
enough points to beat Darren but I do have enough to pass Lucius, given
he doesn't win and I do. This all depends, of course, on which team
we've each chosen. My access to the Nightshade Board has been severed
by the fact that my kid loaded a computer game on my machine last night
that blew it out of the water somehow. I can't remember my fucking
password and secret code. I'll be checking into the board frequently
today once the game starts, checking to make sure I beat you, Minz.
Badgers Blow! Go Gators!

That's Jeff's message...to which I can only add a seconding of his sentiment: The Badgers do, indeed, blow.

But, it's the F---eyes. I'm never happy rooting for them. And who doesn't like pulling for the 'dog? So my heart will be pulling for FL.

In the end, the coveted Millard Fillmore Chairmanship is probably what matters most, so Let's Go, Buckeyes!

oh, and Jeff, I don't remember anyone telling us that Fillmore was buried on the other side of the stone wall at dba, but it could've happened. I do tend to double-fist my drinks at dba, as soon as I get in the door, so my memory can't be trusted. Then again, I'm not the one who has hallucinations about seeing a blooming tree branch lying in the middle of the road in the dead of winter.

But for the record, Fillmore's buried up in Buffalo, near where he grew up, and where he spent much of his life.

And I look forward to discussing all things Fillmore with you at dba at your earliest convenience. Especially after the Gators get embarassed tonight...

Florida wins 28-17. That's my prediction. Ohio State can't cope with Florida's speed on defense. It's close going into the fourth and Florida pulls it out.

Smith throws two interceptions. Leak has one.

Tebow scores--but on a pass, not a run.

Florida attempts 2 field goals from the one yard line and misses both.

Well, given that Troy Smith throws two picks...wow, he doesn't do that often, never in big games. But if Florida wins, I think'll be closer than 11 pts.

I remember when Fla beat WVA in the Orange Bowl some years ago--one of the players said of WVA, "We were surpised how small and weak they were." Much the same thing could be said of the Suckeyes. 50 days...bullshit. Florida had a thirty-some day layoff. 12 days shorter. After two weeks it's all the same. The Suckeyes don't have any excuses. They just got whupped...and out coached. Has Tressel ever heard of adjustments. You're getting killed playing a zone. I imagine he was afraid of gettin hurt with the big play, but after a while you'd think he could figure out that giving the Fla wide-outs that just wasn't working.

Somebody just took a Big Dump on the Big 10.

Hey, the BADgers took care of the SEC runnerup. We can't control the rest of the BT and their total suckage (with props only going to Joepa and Penn State, if you can believe it).

Congrats to the Gators, and yous Gator fans.

And you're absotutely right about the coaching, Lucius. I've never seen such a complete lack of it in an NC game. Not just the ridiculous lack of doing anything to shake up the rush 3 (or maybe 4 every once in a while) and sitting back in your zone all day. Not a bad idea to start the game, to see if Leak is on or not. But it was obvious rather quickly that he was definitely on, so the F---eyes should have gone to kitchen sink blitzin to try and shake him up. But Tressel's failure was on both sides of the ball: Pittman is averaging 5+ yards per carry, so you only give him six carries in the first half. And you don't give it to him on fourth and inches.

I guess he's never heard of game-time adjustments--which may explain why the BADgers have had pretty good success against them, despite the usual talent differential when we played.

Not that I think it would've mattered. Gators came to play, executed on Offense and Defense, and most importantly, controlled the line of scrimmage throughout. They came out hungry and dominated. All OSU could've done was make it less embarassing (even with Ginn.

...oh, and even if they would've had less rest. LMAO. Less rest. Too much time off. Ya, ooookay. Sounds like people who really, really want the bling that would come with a BT championship game--y'see, then they wouldn't have so much time off before the NC game...

Congrats again to the Gators, and to Darren. Now give us an address to send you your ill-gotten booty.

When the idiots from Columbus would call, as soon as they said "I'm Joe Blow, from Columbus" she'd blow them up and kick 'em off the air, just on principle. It was at least half the reason I listened in, just to hear her abuse the idiot Buckeye fans. And they'd keep trying to call. They'd lie about where they were from, but with Caller ID, they knew. Sometimes she'd let 'em actually begin a sentence before bouncing them, just to tweak the idiots. Good times.

And here's hoping the BADgers take care of those Buckeyes tonight, in hoops. Should be a good game.

Minz, your defense of the Little Big Ten (pitiful as it was) begs the issue. The Suckeyes gave up 86 pts, I believe, to the Big Ten, half that last night. The fact is, is there is still a gap between the play of the Big Ten, which is relatively homogenous and unimaginative, and the play of certain other conferences. And that won't change until you clean out the deadwood and start hiring imaginative coaches. The Suckeyes gave up 86 pts, I believe, to the Big Ten, half that last night in part they were confused, out of their depth. They just don't see complex offenses in the Big Ten. Instead they see thuda-thuda Wisconsin and the stylings of Lloyd Carr. the only NC the Ten has won lately has been when OSU beat the Idiot, Larry Coker, and they're not likely to win another until they change their ways. Next year, if Wisconsin gets into the NC game, they'll be crushed by whomever they play. Same with Michigan. Huge offensive lines and dull offenses have had their day. I picked OSU, but I regretted it ever since the day I did - I thought they could pressure Leak into mistakes, but their defensive schemes were too conservative, too. Gotta change, man. Or its all over for the conference formerly known as the Big Ten.

Hey Lucius:

I sort of agree with you re BT. On the one hand, some coaches have brought in the spread offenses, and multiple fronts and the like--to places like Northwestern and Purdue. But because they can't match up to the talent of OSU & Mich, it doesn't matter. The superior athletes dominate the game (except those years when the newer systems have a lot of upperclassmen who are at least pretty talented). So the more tried and true straightup football tends to dominate the style of the top of the conference.

That being said, it comes down to athletes and execution. I've been listening to this same old record get played again, and again, and again. I'd think our drubbing of Auburn, as 14-point dogs in the Capital One Bowl last season, might've proved that it's about execution, not system. Ditto our win over SEC runnerups as 'dogs this year. Do we have to win a national championship to deserve some respect?

Complicated offenses are all fine and dandy, but we'll see if that can be sustained. You need a QB who can handle the sophistication. And when one develops, ala Leak, it's great. But what happens now that he graduates? Think FL offense will be nearly as good next year? Think Teboe can handle that offense? Then who? With the BADgers system, it isn't nearly as dependent upon one player. Two years ago, we had an All-BT running back. When he was healthy, we won. And when he graduated, along with the top two wr, top two TEs and the starting fullback, we were able to rely more on the passing game this year because Stocco was around. (And yes, we obviously benefited from the BT being down this year.) Next year, with Stocco gone, we'll rely more on the running game. Balance that doesn't hinge on just one player. I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with Urban Meier's system. Nor the likes of Spurrier. But that means you really, really need a QB.

And here's the reality check: OSU has been to two NC games in the past five seasons, and won one of them, as the underdog. How can you possibly look at that and say, gee, they suck, and their system sucks. Because they got their butts whooped in one game? Puh-lease. FL was definitely the better squad last night and deserve the championship. And the FL offensive system had a lot to do with that. But if those two teams played ten straight games, my money would be on OSU winning 6 or 7 of 'em, because eventually that d would pull its head out its butt and be able to play against it. It's about athletes, and it's about execution. If Leak would've played even half as bad as Troy "Choke" Smith, it would've been a very different ballgame.

And all you Gator fans, I'm not trying to insult the National Champs. They deserve it, in spades. Played the toughest schedule of not just this season, but one of the toughest I can recall. And took care of bidness throughout, with one small stumble against a talented squad. And when the chips were down, they kicked ass. Hard.

Posted on Tuesday, January 09, 2007 - 01:35 pm:

If those two teams played ten games. Florida would win nine. That's not me saying that, that's Kirk Herbstreit, an OSU alum and former player. The Big Ten got totally outplayed in the Rose Bowl and the BCS. They got outcoached, out-sped, and outphysicaled. OSU was just overmatched and if you don't think so, you didn't watchteh game. I don't blame Smith. He didn't choke. He was either getting hammered or everyone was covered. The great Gonzales was made to look ordinary. You're right, it comes down to athletes and we're getting better athletes because the SEC plays more exciting football. How many Big Ten running backs and receivers are big deals in the NFL? Not near as many as there are from the SEC.
OSU couldn't handle the speed on offense or defense, ie, they had inferior athletes. And don't go on about the cheap NC that OSU stole on a bad call and how tough it is competing in the Big Two. And don't talk about drubbing Auburn and whupping Ark. Ark was a midlevel SEC team that caught Auburn on a down week (just as Wisc did last year) and got smashed by LSU. The Badgers would have gotten killed by LSU or Florida. It's about athletes, right, but you need a good system too. You've got an advantage in neither category.

Like the Man. This was a Parade All-American QB who passed for a zillion yards in hs. He's had more experience at a very high level than most freshman and Florida will have a better running game next year to help take the pressure off, an experienced O-line, a great D. They will make another run. They'll be in the mix.

Ummm. When we played Auburn in Cap One, we were 14-point dogs, and beat them by 14. (You're thinking of the Music City Bowl in 2002, where the Badgers had nothing after Dayne left, because Alvarez tried recruiting with the big boys for a few years and came up empty.)

You're right--the difference was that FL had more playmakers. Without Ginn, that left Smith and Pittman, the latter completely ignored by Tressel for too long. Gonzalez was never all that; without Ginn to worry about, you knew he'd be limited.

And you're probably right about rematches, though if both teams completely healthy, I think OSU would win their fair share. Even Tressel and his dunderheaded DC would eventually figure out how to defend the spread better. And OSU wasn't as bad as they looked that one night. It was just one game. Granted, it was THE game, and FL whooped their butts in virtually every aspect of the game (the only negative against FL was the shenanigans their special teams were doing--could've cost them in a tight game). But you're putting too much emphasis on that one game. OSU does not suck because of it, and indeed, has the recent success to back that up. I don't think the OSU athletes were all that inferior, they just played worse, and definitely had poorer coaching

When I'm looking at the conferences, I don't look at stats or bowl performance (that's affected by all kinds of variables)--I look at the athletes on the field. Even in Wisconsin's victory over Ark, I thought Ark had the quicker and more physical players. Wisc was bigger, no doubt, but Ark was far more athletic albeit their athletes were young and untutored and had not fully learned to use their athleticism. In the PSU game and etc, I saw the same thing. Better athletes. The determinant, in my view, of Fla-OSU was not playmakers so much as it was the speed and physicality of the O and D lines. There was a huge gap there. Florida looked like Miami once did. Quick, vicious-hitting secondary, mobile lines. Had OSU dropped out of their zone, Leak would have gone over the top on them--that's what they were afraid of. The one argument I won't object to is that OSU would have done better had they committed to the run more, but when that happened to Miami, they caused fumbles...and I equate this Florida team with some of the better Miami teams. Not the absolute best--that was the team that lost to Penn State with Irvin and Jerome Brown and Testaverde and so on. The best team doesn't always win in bowl games, but in this case, they did.

Anyway, things will continue as they are until the Big Ten and Pac Ten develop other teams that can compete with the elite and grow a stronger middle of the conference. The SEC is going to be a bloody nightmare. I wouldn't be surprsed if a two-or-three loss teams wins the conference soon.

I agree that in general, the SEC recruits better athletes. But the great thing about football is that it does take more than just athletes--they have to work together as a team. What made FL unstoppable was that these great athletes worked together, on both sides of the ball.

And that's why the BADgers have won the past few bowl games as underdogs, because the whole was definitely greater than the parts (pretty much true of all 3 Rose Bowl teams, this year's team, etc.) Great coaching and preparation can overcome great athleticism. It takes more than that to win (just look at Miami's troubles with Coker, despite the wealth of athleticism.)

And that's also why a lot of SEC teams have great defenses, and spotty offenses--because they get great athletes who aren't necessarily smart football players. Defense is much more dependent upon athleticism.

And say what you want about who had the better athletes, all I know is the BADger players were the ones who made the plays to win the game. Feel free to continue offering up excuses for Arkansas; I'm still pretty certain what matters is who's got the most points at the end of the game. (This ain't Track & Field, it's football.)

Oh my god. That you made this statement is incomprehensible. You don't have to play anyone. 1 or two games a year. It's pathetic. They were making fun of Big 10 schedules on Sportscenter last night. Florida has a "spotty offense" because they play in the SEC, where nearly every team can play solid D.

I repeat that there was little to choose between Ark and Wisc. I never offered excuses, I just said they were young and next year they'll kick your ass if they play you.

Auburn, Arkansas, LSU: all great d's, all iffy offenses. And that's hardly just this season. LSU's NC year, everyone still questioned their offense, right up until they won it all. 'Bama's been that way for many a year as well.
And I didn't say all of SEC, but it is a generalization that has some teeth. I stand by it. SEC is known for great D, and not known for great O. :-)
(very notable exceptions: Spurrier's Gator teams, and Tenn)

Oh, and "Ark was far more athletic albeit their athletes were young and untutored and had not fully learned to use their athleticism."

Sounds like excuses to me. :-)

Okay, okay, I'll stop being such a pain. (On this thread. For now.)

How 'bout those #3 ranked BADgers, handing the Suckeyes another big defeat, on back-to-back nights! WOOHOO!

What a conference is known for is usually media bullshit. What it is, is something else. When presented with a medicore Notre Dame team, they showed their offense, just as Florida did when presented with a mediocre OSU team. It's the same bulshit every year. It's the Big Two who run vanilla and subvanilla offenses -- It's the SEC whio run's wide open and pro-style Os. How many Big Two QBs are starting in the NFL. Brady and who else? How many from the south? How many from the SEC, and you can add Jamarcus Russell to the list because he'll be starting in the NFL. SEC offenses are spotty because the play SEC defenses.

LOL. Lucius, Michigan has the most QBs in the league. Tom Brady, Brian Griese, Drew Henson, John Navarre, and Todd Collins. (I want to say there's one more, but I'm blanking)

Heck even the BADgers have 2 QBs on NFL rosters (Sorgi & Bollinger).

Then there's Trent Green, Kyle Orton, Kerry Collins oh, and some hack by the name of Drew Brees.

I'm sure there're probably others, but I gotta go grab some zzzzzzz

I said starting. I didn't mean every hack-ass qb in the league. And Drew Henson's no longer in the NFL. I forgot about Bees and Green. Still, we got ya. Face it, Minz. Football is all about southern boys. Not dairy-fed, cheesehead steroid abusers with pimples all over their backs. Even St Brett went to Southern Miss.
