Probably not enough people left on the board to this but what the hell --

Games that interest me. KY-Louisville (closer than expected). Okla-UAB (How's the Sooner O?). Fla-Southern Miss. Marshall-WVU. Virginia-Pitt (how bad a pasting will the Cavs lay on the Panthers...or are the Panthers a real challenge in the BE?). La Tech-Nebraska (how good is Big Red?);

The most impressive rookie on the Houston Texans is not Mario Williams, it's Demeco Ryan, LB, Alabama. That guy should never have dropped into the second round...and wouldn't have if not for the combine's love of stats. The jury is out on whether Williams can make the adjustment to the NFL, but Ryan has already beat out Sam Cowart and is on his way to a stellar career.

Oh, yeah. The Spurriers should be interesting, And Ryan is the shit.

Have I seen anybody better than Cincy? Well, they played the Packers so it's hard to tell. Truthfully, I think Palmer's knee may still be a problem. They have a ridiculously tough schedule, and I think they may have a lot of problems, esp on defense. I thought NE looked good; the Cowboys look very strong. Denver looks good. Carolina has looked good. I think Cincy may have a rough year, but I could be wrong.

Well, the Gophers have a running game and Kent has no run defense whatsoever.

Phrases I'm going to be sick of this season:
"The ghost of Randy Walker"
"The Wildcats got some help from above"

Not that anyone's said them . . . yet.

Judging purely from writeups and statistics, BC is not as great as people thought. Or Central Michigan is suddenly a powerhouse.

. . . I can't say that with a straight face.

Arkansas' rushing attack may give USC some trouble.

I think Cal will handle Tennessee -- anxious to see how the latter looks.

Looking forward to seeing how Auburn, Florida, and Bama perform.

I'd like to see a good ND-GT game, but not sure GT can hang.

Like you, Lucius, I'm interested in seeing how OK's offense has improved.

But other than Bama, USC-ARK is the game I'm looking most forward to -- that is, until Monday :-)

Tell Auburn how lame the Pac 10 is. . .

BADgers are doing fine. Just needed a quarter to warm up. Shaugnessy and Cooper are going to get to know the BG QB really well tonight - up close and personal.

Hill runs like Dayne - a giant pinball. 6.2 yds/carry. I'll take that. We need a receiving game, though, that much is apparent.

The big east went two and o versus the ACC.

I didn't see Texas, but no one I saw looked very good today. Okla really looked vulnerable--I think they're kaput. Michigan....boring, Dropped balls. The Gators scoring 34 on Southern Miss was fairly impressive, cause SM's always tough on D. Pitt coming down and beating UVA might signal good things.

Gonna look at Louisville tomorrow.

Boy, I was wrong about Tenn. And Ark.

Bama -- to be fair, they were playing down the depth chart, and warming up a new QB. I'm concerned about the D, though. Offensive line, last year's huge problem late, appear to be strong, particularly the left side.

I don't think we learned too much about the way things are going to shape, for everybody I mean...Go Miami Monday.

Coker can't coach, he can't instill discipline, he just an old alky who took over from Butch Davis after Davis tunred the program around and lucked into an NC. They won't win another till he's out of there. Course I'm spoiled, but look at the talent they have on both sides of the ball. It's just going to waste under Coker. He too unimaginative to do anything but run the program into the ground.

Tough luck on the U. How does a center forget where the QB is on an important play in 4Q? Miami's defense looks stellar, so they'll win a lot of games until the offense jells and Sam Shields learns how to catch a football.

Yeah, BC did not look like world-beaters, that's for sure.

All the miscues/penalties/drops were very un-U like.

Overall, tho, you've got to acknowledge a general decline in the quality of the Miami-FSU series. Remember in the late 80s/early 90s, how it was always one great offensive play after another? Compare that with the last two installmentzzzzzzzzzz.

It flat amazes me that a real BADger fan would deign to even watch a Miam game, the quality of football being so high in the Dairy State. Well, I know what I'm doing Saturday. Yessir. While other folks are watching Notre Dame-PSU and such, I'm watching me a real game. ESPNU has gotten the rights to show the titanic struggle between the BADgers and the Western Illinois Leathernecks. Yowzah. It don't get no better than that. Victors last week over that powerhouse Morehead State, no doubt the division 1AA behemoths won't be looking past the BADgers, despite having NC contenders like Youngstown State and Western Kentucky on their schedule. When these two teams get together, watch out California -- the Richter scale don't go high enough to register that quake! Led by a couple of former Wisconsin backups, the Leathernecks promise to make Camp Randall a hell on earth for Badgers and Badgerettes alike. Come Sunday they'll be flying the flag at half-mast. Pray for the fallen.

Yet another big smile. :-)

Actually, except for Texas-OSU, this week doesn't deserve a seperate thread. What's the point of having more football if you're going to add games like Westen Illinois-Wisconsin to yr schedule? The weakest thing the BCS has done is to remove strength of schedule from the NC mix. That prompted Charlie Weiss to immediately drop BC from the schedule, and as soon as the current contracts run out, I doubt we'll see any big teams scheduling serious non-conference opponents. That could have a benefit in some quarters, the production of so many undefeated teams each year, that hue and cry for playoffs will intensify. But until that happens, the tougher conferences will be shit out of luck. You may see a run of NC game appearances by Southern Cal and West Virgina. It's really too bad.

And why orange? I don't get it.

Get off the fence, Lucius! Throw your mojo behind Texas this weekend and we'll make it worth your while.

I'm thinking free enchiladas!

You can't root for OSU, can you? I realize you're not a UT fan, but surely you don't foster the same amount of vitriol for our boys in burnt orange as you do for the Buckeyes.

'course if the Buckeyes lose, and we don't face them this year, and we win all our non-con games, then . . . nah, go OSU!

Pitt looked good after a spotty start. Their reciever Gregg Kinder looks like a man among boys. There are some remarkable young receivers coming up after Calvin Johnson. Gihn, Kinder, Breaston, et al. Gonna be a surplus of talent at that position.

ND -7.5 Penn St
UT -3 OH St.

These lines just don't look right to me (and I realize they're not an estimation of worth).

A couple things will be learned today. But next week...that's when things will really begin to shake out a bit.

Yeah, thought that was a bit much.

But I'm not betting. I haven't placed a bet since winning two-pars on the first two games of the NBA championship and then losing two soccer matches.

If I were, though, I'd have to take that OH St +3 -- assuming the line hasn't already changed.

I think he was trying to do jumping jacks. In any case, it was ugly.

I think McCoy got shaken up after taking those hits early. He got clocked a couple of times.

Oh, and:

Wisconsin 2-0
Miami 2-0

I'll check rankings on Monday. :-)

And this week's question: will any of the highly-ranked teams that struggled with clearly inferior teams drop in their ranking? TN? FSU? Bama?

I think Wisconsin is likely to suffer more from playing weak oppositon.

Miami 2-0? Not Miami of Ohio; not Miami. Is there some otther miami?

Those were getting over a big game games or looking ahead games. So probably not. ND is not the #2 team in the country. The SEC is strong. The Pac 10 is non-existent; the Big Ten is once again a two-team conference; The Big 12 is the little One.

Oh well.

Remember last year's interview?

Yeah, man, what we gotta do in the second half, man, is get some better blocking up front, man, set up the pass with the run, man, and just let Vince do his thing, man.

Bama isn't even ranked in the AP...#26. I'm not expecting to break in unless we get through Arkansas to the Florida game undefeated. Next week is Louisiana-Monroe (yeah, I know), then it's Ark at Ark. I want that game. Assuming we lose to Tenn, Fla and LSU on the road, and Auburn at home, we could still have an 8-4 season (having beaten nobody, but still). Next year's the year, as far as I'm concerned, and next year, our non-conference schedule won't be so weak -- we get Fla St.

Texas could go 11 and I this year. Kinda frightening, the disparity in strength of schedule.

I think Tennessee can be had. Auburn and LSU, I'm not so sure about. USC is going to cakewalk to 12-O.

I repeat, LVille is gonna fucking kill Miami. They're going to lose every game they can lose this year. As far as LVille goes, what was Brom doing playing in the fourth quarter yesterday?

Week Three is a college football lover's dream (rankings from this past week):

#10 Mich at #4 Notre Dame ***
#17 Miami at #13 Louisville
#15 Oklahoma at #20 Oregon
#8 LSU at #4 Auburn ***
#18 Clemson at #9 Fla St
#21 Nebraska at #3 USC ***
#7 Fla at #11 Tenn ***
#24 Tex Tech at #23 TCU

That's 16 of the top 25 playing each other!

***Can't fucking wait for these. Sal-i-vation.

BC showed me something, hanging tough and coming from behind to beat a top 20 team. I had my doubts after their week one performance, but they looked a lot more solid this week. They are ready to creep into the top 25. Anybody see TN-Air Force? What happened to the Vols? Ohio State is definitely the real thing.

Uh, yeah, ESPN's, among others. Everybody was talking up Clemson as an ACC contender. Now all of a sudden, they're mediocre. Guess we'll see...Maybe BC is a little better than people thought, myself included. Let the season play out. All of a sudden FSU is looking soft and Miami-BC looks more like a significant game.

Miami-BC significant? You must think more or Miami than I do. Whatever, they'll beat BC. I thought pre-season Clemson had a good D and mght possibly contend. I stillthinkk they may, because their QB will get better. But mediocre is and has been the word I'd use to describe them.

You're not going to get any arguement from me about Texas. The youngster QB has a lot of breaking in to do. And the defense was nowhere near where it was last year. Worse, the team seemed to lack the intensity that got them through the tough games.

In summary: Vince is gone.

Oh well, at least they get to vent their frustration on the mighty Rice Owls this week.
